- After the First Draft
May 21, 2022
10:00 am - 3:00 pm
This is a course for writers of long and short fiction who have new work in progress that they’re looking to develop beyond a first draft. We will be reading published stories, and then using them as blueprints to examine our own work by way of writing exercises. These are stories and exercises I turn to repeatedly when revising my own work, and each has been selected for how it treats a specific element of fiction: characterization, plot, point of view, etc. The desirable endgame of this weekend is you leave with some ideas and tools for how to move your story or novel into its next draft.
Participants should bring their works in progress. They will also be sent a packet of things to read before we meet, including stories by Chekhov, William Trevor, and Joy Williams.
Limit of 12 participants. Please fill out this form to apply for a scholarship
Please note: In the event that the workshop is unable to be held face-to-face the workshop will be offered in an online format. This will be on the same dates as advertised unless an alternative date is specified. Please note that the online offering of the workshop may be shorter – or in a slightly different format.
|General ticket||$120.00 (NZD)||Sold Out|
"After the First Draft" is currently sold out.
Please check back again later, as spots may become available.
Venue: Waikanae Baptist Church Hall
We use two spaces at the Waikanae Baptist Church, both are warm and naturally lit. The first is the ground floor meeting room, with a separate open plan dining area, with access to a garden area. If this is unavailable, we use the upstairs meeting room which a modern, well lit self-contained space.
The venue has a ramp to enter the building and an accessible toilet.
The dining area is a reasonable distance from the meeting room but food can be brought to a participant who is unable to walk there.
The upstairs room is only accessibly by stairs. Wherever possible, we use the ground floor option.
Please drive around the back of the venue and enter through the left hand door. The meeting room is the first room on the left.
Refreshments are provided as part of the session. If you have any dietary requirements please mention these when you register.
