Prose poetry is a delicious contradiction and an uninhibited rejection of the traditional verse/prose binary.
This ‘formless form’ has surprised and confounded readers for centuries, forcing many to question what makes a poem a poem if it doesn’t contain the supposed defining feature of poetry – enjambment. Although early versions of the form date back as early as the 17th century, prose poetry has seen a surge in popularity in recent years with several dedicated anthologies published in Australia and the U.S.
So what sets prose poetry apart from other prose genres and forms? In this workshop, participants will take a deep dive into the history of prose poetry and analyse examples of the form before writing and workshopping their own prose poems. What can prose poetry offer to both writers and readers that other poetic forms can’t?

Chris Tse
Chris Tse (he/him) is the author of three poetry collections published by Auckland University Press: How to be Dead in a Year of Snakes (winner of the 2016 Jessie Mackay Award for Best First Book of Poetry); HE'S SO MASC; and Super Model Minority. He and Emma Barnes are co-editors of Out Here: An anthology of Takatāpui and LGBTQIA+ writers from Aotearoa. Chris is The Spinoff’s Poetry Editor and a regular contributor to Capital. In August 2022 he was named the New Zealand Poet Laureate for 2022-24.

We use two spaces at the Waikanae Baptist Church, both are warm and naturally lit. The first is the ground floor meeting room, with a separate open plan dining area, with access to a garden area. If this is unavailable, we use the upstairs meeting room which a modern, well lit self-contained space.
Accessibility
The venue has a ramp to enter the building and an accessible toilet.
The dining area is a reasonable distance from the meeting room but food can be brought to a participant who is unable to walk there.
The upstairs room is only accessibly by stairs. Wherever possible, we use the ground floor option.
Getting there
Please drive around the back of the venue and enter through the left hand door. The meeting room is the first room on the left.

Refreshments are provided as part of the session. If you have any dietary requirements please mention these when you register.
