This workshop will examine sample poems, discuss elements of craft and explore the way certain poems are inspired, written and edited. Come with paper and pen or digital device prepared to experiment with writing exercises and write new poems.

We’ll look at a a range of poems by various poets, including Robert Hass, Hone Tuwhare, Bill Manhire, Nina Mingya Powles, and Mohamed Hassan. Alison will also include some of her own poems to reveal the permutations of writing them.

The workshop is suitable for all levels, for anyone wanting to work their poetic muscle.

Some feedback from participants in Alison’s workshop Some Exercises for the Poetic Muscle:

The poetry workshop was a great, non-threatening opportunity to meet like-minded people, learn tips and techniques for expressing myself from more experienced writers, have time and space to try out some specific exercises, and share thoughts and feedback.

A gifted teacher. Shared lots of knowledge and was very encouraging. Down to earth and gave very helpful constructive feedback. I loved the exercises and the readings were spot on. There was enough time to share if you wanted. It was amazing.

I found Alison’s workshop a positive learning experience.
